The purpose of the laboratory is primarily to introduce the concept of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) by demonstrating remotely through the internet the operations of an actual CIM cell that is located at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur.  The CIM cell comprises of several automated manufacturing equipments such as a CNC machine, a robotic assembly station, an inspection station and other handling and storage equipments all integrated together and a CIM software with various features such as graphical simulation of the CIM cell for tracking the cell operations in real time as well as MRP, scheduling and dispatching, inventory control and tracking. This laboratory through remote experimentation will make the students appreciate and develop better understanding of the concept of integrated manufacturing by orchestrating the major factors of automation and its management. It will further help the students learn the operation of automated manufacturing operations like CNC machining, robotic assembly, machine vision based inspection, automated material handling and storage as well as modeling, simulation and performance analysis of CIM systems.
