Micro- and nanoelectronic device and circuit design and fabrication are specialized fields in electrical engineering. Semiconductor device theory and IC processing courses are becoming more important in electrical engineering curricula due to the fast changing semiconductor technologies and challenges faced by the semiconductor industry. In all undergraduate Engineering (Electrical and Electronics) and virtually in all graduate programs, there are courses on device physics and semiconductor technology based on text books on MOS and bipolar devices and has a very strong connection to the device modeling and process technology. With the rapid technological development of microelectronics, it is becoming increasingly challenging to address undergraduate education in microelectronics. The success of a VLSI circuit design depends on the device models used to describe the device behavior. Technology CAD (TCAD) now being a proven approach for developing semiconductor process technologies, online Technology CAD laboratory will provide opportunities for hands-on experience for the students.

With the introduction of the online Technology CAD (TCAD) laboratory, students can perform simulation experiments to study device behavior of diodes and transistors (bipolar and MOSFETs) and extract SPICE parameters necessary for circuit simulation.

The online Technology CAD (TCAD) laboratory has currently 10 simulation experiments on various devices (diode, bipolar and MOSFET) characteristics and are used to extract SPICE parameters for circuit simulation. In the TCAD laboratory, simulation program - Tool for Electronic Model Automation (TEMA) is used for the extraction of SPICE parameters.

The online laboratory resources are implemented based on dynamic HTML Web pages to provide the students with a user-friendly interface for performing their laboratory tasks. A three tier architecture viz. client, resource manager and experiment station has been used. Authentication is used in order to restrict access to the online experiments to authorized users.
